Ideas from STAEDTLER® go around the world!

Today, the company STAEDTLER Mars GmbH & Co. KG has 22 subsidiaries.

This makes STAEDTLER, with its four production plants in the Nuremberg metropolitan region, the largest European manufacturer of graphite pencils, coloured pencils, erasers, mechanical pencil leads and modelling clays.

STAEDTLER®'s journey round the world at a glance

Source: GNM, Nuremberg, Library

Johann Sebastian Staedtler was the first to come up with idea to ship his pencils all over the world and to have them inspire people of many different cultures.

J. S. Staedtler was already represented at the World Exhibition in New York in 1835.

From the year 1840 onwards, he participated in all of the key exhibitions, proudly presenting his products.

1866

In recognition of his outstanding performance and top-quality pencils, he was distinguished with awards and medals of honour in Nuremberg, London and Paris.

By the year 1866, the company's sales network had already become expansive and included Austria, France, England, Italy, Russia, America and the Orient.

STAEDTLER employees in the 19th century

By 1870, he had a workforce of 54 employees manufacturing more than 2 million pencils highly valued the world over.

STAEDTLER Headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany

In 1988, the company’s head office was relocated from the Nuremberg district of St. Johannis to a new site in the northern periphery of the city.

The convenient motorway and airport access and central location within the city triangle formed by the towns of Nuremberg, Fuerth and Erlangen are ideal factors for securing the further development of the company.
As a result, a modern new building complex was erected on a 47,000 m2 site in Nuremberg-Neuhof at a total investment of around 130 million DM.

Design awards

Design follows function!
On the winner's podium: STAEDTLER triplus 426 and STAEDTLER WOPEX!

We believe that design moves markets!

Outstanding product quality combined with an interest and passion for sophisticated design – that's our motto and the reason why STAEDTLER is a member of Nuremberg's Design Forum.

Our ballpoint pen triplus 426 in the line widths F and M and in the barrel colours blue, black, red and green is the newest member to join the triplus family.
Its design is equivalent to the award winning mechanical pencil 776 which was launched last year and distinguished with the reddot design award 2009.

Just like the mechanical pencil, the ballpoint pen counterpart, triplus 426, comes equipped with a non-slip rubberised barrel surface and harmonious, rounded triangular shape.

Our ballpoint pen has been distinguished with the internationally renowned red dot design award 2011!

Yet another award for STAEDTLER’s innovative WOPEX pencil: In the category ‘Product’, WOPEX impressed the jury of experts and was distinguished with the ‘iF material award 2010’.

89 entries from 66 participants from 18 different countries were tested and evaluated based on a number of key criteria such as innovation, choice of material, workmanship, environmental compatibility, design quality, functionality, ergonomics and safety.

WOPEX met all the criteria with flying colours. After all, with WOPEX, STAEDTLER has succeeded in developing a product which is not only extremely innovative but is particularly ecologically efficient at the same time and offers a high level of user benefit.

The standard-setting innovative WOPEX material is a natural fibre material with 70% wood. It enables a significantly higher utilisation of wood per tree using wood solely from PEFC-certified, sustainably managed forests. In addition, WOPEX is manufactured in a completely solvent-free production procedure and offers particularly high lead stability and break resistance.

Since its introduction in 1953, the iF award has come to be recognised as a reliable indicator of outstanding design. In the categories ‘Material’, ‘Product’ and ‘Process’, aspirants for the coveted iF prize include manufacturers, designers, developers, constructors and architects whose products display a both innovative and efficient use of materials.

All winning entries, including WOPEX, were displayed in the special ‘material TRENDS exhibition 2010’ at the Hannover Fair from 19th – 23rd April 2010.
